Afghanistan has recorded more CoV deaths in one day than at any time since the pandemic began. Yesterday, authorities reported 50 deaths since the previous day related to coronavirus infection. The actual number is likely much higher.
The number of new infections reported daily in the crisis-stricken country has also risen sharply recently, from fewer than 200 in early May to more than 1,300 for several days in a row. The driver of the third wave is believed to be the delta variant, which was first detected in India. There are no travel restrictions to Afghanistan. Nearly a dozen flights land daily from India.
The government reimposed restrictions just a few days ago. Schools in 16 of the 34 provinces have also been closed again for about a week. Currently, no new people are being admitted for vaccinations due to a lack of vaccine. So far, the country with an estimated population of 37 million had received 968,000 vaccine doses. It is unclear when more will come.
